Notice. Talk. Act.® at School: Strengthening Adult Capacity to Support Youth Mental Health

Youth mental health concerns have grown significantly over the past decade, and adults in schools and afterschool programs are often the first to see when a young person may be struggling. Notice. Talk. Act.® at School, developed by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation in partnership with SAMHSA, is a practical training that equips every adult who interacts with students to recognize early warning signs and respond with confidence and care.

This training supports community school staff, afterschool professionals, teachers, coaches, custodial staff, food service teams, nurses, mental health personnel, and administrators in learning how to:

Notice

  • Identify early behavioral, emotional, or physical indicators of emerging mental health concerns

  • Observe changes in attendance, engagement, or academic performance that may signal a need for support

Talk

  • Use active listening, empathy, and motivational interviewing techniques to open safe, supportive conversations

  • Practice communication strategies through guided role-play

Act

  • Understand school and district referral pathways

  • Connect students and families to school- and community-based mental health supports

  • Make timely, appropriate referrals when concerns arise

This training reinforces the whole-child approach at the heart of Community Schools and OST programs — ensuring every adult in the building is prepared to build trust, support well-being, and help students access the services they need.
